EV Charging Useful Information:
How do you charge an electric vehicle?
Electric vehicles can be plugged straight into a domestic three-pin socket at home, or via a home wallbox charger, which can be installed on the outside of your property or in your garage.
What is a home wallbox charger?
Home wallbox chargers can be installed on the outside of your property or in your garage, and many models can be controlled by your smartphone. Wallboxes typically start at 3kW and go up to around 22kW. All fast chargers, rated between 7kW and 22kW can fully recharge a small electric vehicle in three to four hours.
How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle?
When plugged into a domestic socket, which has maximum current of 3kW, charging can take all night. Whereas Wallboxes typically start at 3kW and go up to around 22kW, the rating can be chosen to suit your needs. All fast chargers, rated between 7kW and 22kW can fully recharge a small electric vehicle in three to four hours.
How much does it cost to charge an electric vehicle?
With a domestic socket there are no install costs , but the car takes several hours to charge. Electricity costs 14p per kWh on average. So, you’d pay £6 for a 13-hour full charge on a 40kWh Nissan Leaf at a 3kW charger. However, as electricity costs less off-peak (at night, for instance), the charge is more likely to be £4. A home wallbox charger can supply power between 3 and 22kW. You’ll need to pay to install one, but a government grant will fund up to 75% of the purchase, up to £350.00. A 7kW wallbox cuts the charge time significantly, with little change in the cost of electricity.
What is the OZEV grant scheme?
The grant is a Government subsidy to reduce the cost of home wallbox installation, covering up to 75% of the purchase price, with a maximum contribution of £350.
Am I eligible for the OZEV grant?
To be eligible for the OZEV grant, you need to meet the following points: You have dedicated off-street parking Your plug -in vehicle was purchased after 1 October 2016 You have not already claimed the grant for your vehicle By claiming the grant, you’re not exceeding the limit of two OZEV-funded charge points per house From July 2019, the criteria for the grant was updated to insist that eligible chargers must be ‘smart’. This means being able to connect to the internet to be operated remotely so that charging times can be scheduled. A list of approved models and installers is provided on the Government’s website.
